1. Your listing hasn’t produced a single interested home buyer.

2. You were the only one at your open house.

3. Your real estate agent isn’t taking your calls.

5. Even the home vandals aren’t interested in your house.

8. Your real estate agent is working at the local coffee shop making lattes.

9. The home improvement stores in your city are all closing their doors.

10. Your for sale sign was stolen.

Now here is everything (well, almost everything) you need to know in business about environmental, international law, election and campaign law, consumer law, class actions, constitutional, internet, publishing, advertising, media, publicity and privacy rights, employment law, estate planning, wills, trusts, water law, agricultural, insurance law, bad faith, psychologist and psychotherapist defense, education law and child accidents.

You can also find all you need to know (well, mostly) in business about personal injury, car accidents, brain damage, wrongful deaths, business, real estate, landlord-tenant, homeowners association law, construction, patents, trademarks, corporations, entertainment law, advertising, copyrights, food and wine, and hotel and restaurant law and litigation by searching for those subjects and adding the words Riverside business lawyer or Riverside business attorney to your search terms and looking for other articles by Sebastian Gibson.

You can also learn more about any of these business areas of law and how we can assist you as Riverside business attorneys, or as lawyers in any city, by calling the Law Offices of R. Sebastian Gibson at any of the numbers which can be found on our website at http://www.SebastianGibsonLaw.com .

1. Personal Injury, Car Accidents, Brain Damage, Catastrophic Injuries and Wrongful Deaths in Riverside - If you’ve had a Riverside auto, motorcycle, truck, pedestrian, bicycle, bus, train, airplane or car accident of any kind, get the other driver’s information, take camera or cell phone pictures, call the police, get a report, seek medical treatment immediately, call us or another good Riverside personal injury lawyer. Report the accident to your insurance agent, file a report with the DMV and don’t talk to anyone else or give a recorded statement until you talk with an attorney from our office. If you’ve lost a loved on in an accident, call us or another good Riverside personal injury lawyer immediately. Brain damage and catastrophic injury cases as with wrongful death cases require the expertise of a Riverside attorney with experience in these difficult cases. If you want to ensure that you and your family members receive the compensation you deserve, be sure to hire a Riverside personal injury attorney with decades of experience with brain damage, catastrophic injuries and wrongful deaths.

2. Environmental and Toxic Tort Law in Riverside - With multi-billion dollar energy companies spending more money to confuse the public on the threat posed by global warming than on research into alternative forms of energy, it will take all of us to sort fact from fiction and solve the growing problem of global warming. An additional danger to all of us comes from exposure to toxic materials in our daily lives from tainted food, to contaminated ground water, to dangerous viruses in the public and in hospitals to lead and mercury poisoning. If you experience unusual symptoms that a doctor can’t explain, you may have been exposed to a toxic substance and have a toxic tort claim that should be evaluated by us or another qualified Riverside environmental attorney.

3. Riverside International, Shipping and Maritime Law - A Riverside international attorney with years of international legal education and experience such as you’ll find at our Riverside law firm, can provide you with a wealth of practical knowledge and the ability to find answers to your international law questions. It is to your advantage to also have a Riverside international lawyer working in cooperation with foreign counsel in other jurisdictions to ensure that the most cost-effective avenues are pursued to resolve your legal matter. However, many international matters can be resolved with letters between Riverside international lawyers and foreign lawyers, and international mediations and arbitrations can also be utilized. If you have been injured on a ship or an oil rig you have rights under the Jones Act to be compensated for your injuries, medical treatment, past and future wage loss and care.

4. Riverside Election and Campaign Finance Law - If you are considering running for political office or have already done so and are facing campaign finance legal issues, the time to hire a Riverside election attorney with election law knowledge is at the first possible opportunity before you get into hot water that can sink your campaign or put your political career into jeopardy.

5. Riverside Consumer Law and Class Actions - If you have paid for an item but have not received it, been promised an action or service that has not come to fruition or are considering ordering services or signing any type of agreement, the time to hire a Riverside consumer lawyer is immediately in order to avoid being scammed, or defrauded. A Riverside consumer attorney’s letter drafted forcefully but professionally will obtain the desired result, products or services in a good percentage of cases. Whether you ordered gold bars but did not receive them, were told that your car would be paid off when you traded it in on a new one or were promised that a pool would be completed in your back yard, a Riverside consumer attorney can and should be hired for a modest fee to write a letter on your behalf and demand the required action, products or services. If you think you are just one of many who have been scammed or defrauded in some way, you may have a class action.

6. Constitutional, Publishing and Publicity and Privacy Rights, Internet Law, Advertising and Media Law in Riverside - Defamation includes both libel and slander. Anyone in the media or publishing or broadcast world or with a web site is at risk of a lawsuit for claims of defamation or false advertising However, constitutional law questions also arise in civil rights discrimination cases, discrimination in employment and a wide variety of other legal matters. If you have been disenfranchised or your constitutional rights abused in any matter or if you have been accused of abusing the rights of others, contact a Riverside constitutional lawyer as soon as it occurs. If others seek to profit with the use of your name or image you also have a claim for damages.

7. Employment Law in Riverside - It may seem silly to think you should hire a Riverside employment attorney whenever you are considering firing an employee, but it has come to that. However, a consultation with a good Riverside employment law firm can provide you with the advice of how to handle your employee relations both immediately and in the future as you either seek to cut costs or get rid of a problematic employee. If you have been sued or threatened with a suit, or are being scammed by an employee, consult a Riverside employment lawyer immediately.

8. Riverside Estate Planning, Wills and Trusts - The current estate tax in 2008 affects only people who die with an estate in excess of two million dollars. In 2009, that amount will increase to three and a half million dollars and in 2010, the estate tax is repealed. That’s the good news. If, however, the estate tax repeal is not extended by 2011, the estate tax will kick in again. The worse news is that in 2011, if the estate tax repeal is not extended, the estate tax will kick in at one million dollars. The current federal estate tax rate is a whopping 47 percent. That stays the same in 2009. But other current provisions in the tax code change or end in 2010. In light of this, it is more important than ever to hire a Riverside estate planning lawyer to draft your will and evaluate the need for a living trust to avoid probate fees ensure your estate goes to the beneficiaries you want it to go to. If you don’t have a will or trust at death, the state will determine who gets your estate, but it will usually be your spouse and children, of if you have none, your closest relatives.

9. Water, Agricultural and Natural Resource Law in Riverside - It is hoped by American farmers and meat producers that the new Country of Origin Labeling Law taking effect in groceries will cause food shoppers to seek meat and produce from the U.S. over food items from other countries. But it is the water shortage in California that has California farmers faced with dire consequences. In 2008, the California Governor formed a Water Bank to stave off mandatory water rationing, but if California has another dry winter, or more fires that draw upon California’s precious water reserves, or if the state legislature does not address the state’s delta environmental problems and expand the state’s water works, with a bill that has been tied up while the legislators haggled over a budget, rationing across the state could become a reality. If you have a water or agricultural issue, the time to call a Riverside agricultural lawyer with knowledge in this areas is before the issue becomes critical.

10. Insurance Law, Bad Faith, Psychologist, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist Defense in Riverside - As insurance companies feel the pain of the stock market crash and face the reality of the value of their own investments decreasing, we expect to see insurance companies delaying settlements, and flirting with violations of the insurance bad faith statutes. As the public becomes more and more depressed with the sinking stock market, loss of jobs, reduced income and less enjoyment out of life, we also see the likelihood of greater use of psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists. When claims are made against these professionals without justification, our Riverside law firm stands ready to defend them

11. Riverside Education Law and Child Accidents - A recent court ruling in California has given temporary relief to parents homeschooling their children. However, we still expect further court rulings to make guidelines that will govern when or under what circumstances homeschooling of children will be permitted in California. Children, as any parent knows, can be injured any time, anywhere. What should not happen is any injury to a child that is the result of the negligence of another. To that end, our Riverside personal injury lawyers championed protection for children and convinced at least one court and encouraged other personal injury attorneys to do the same, to uphold a new tort for negligent endangerment of a child.

If you have homeschooled for any amount of time (or even if you’ve just kicked around the idea of homeschooling in lighthearted conversation), you have had this thought or have been asked this question: “What about socialization?” This is a topic that seems to automatically arise in any discussion about homeschooling, especially if one of the people involved in the discourse does not homeschool. First, I think it’s important to tease out what the inquisitor means by “socialization”. When answering this question, it’s important to know if the question is about socialization or socializing, as the two have vastly different meanings. I generally find that most people actually mean “socializing” when this topic comes up but there are some who genuinely mean “socialization.” In this article I will give you my understanding of these two concepts and tell you what I think about each of them as they relate to homeschooling.

SOCIALIZING - In my experience, most people who ask “What about socialization” are actually asking, “Hey - will your kid ever get to see anyone but their own family? Will they get to play ball? Have a same-age peer group? Share secrets with best friends? Send spit balls flying across a cafeteria?” There seems to be a concern that homeschoolers will “miss out” on all of the “fun” things that we associate with our own school experiences. I will say emphatically that for us, socializing is NOT an issue. (Well, actually, I may have to take that back. It in fact CAN be an issue, but not in the way that you might think. I have had several conversations with fellow homeschooling mothers who laugh and say “we’ve got to cut out some of our social activities - we need to get some school work done!”) Homeschoolers have a multitude of opportunities to socialize with peers and sometimes, we have to avoid the pitfall of having too many things on the social schedule.

When I was growing up (way back in the ’70’s and ’80’s) we actually had some very good friends who were homeschooled. I will say that for that family, socializing may have been an issue and here’s the reason: They were the ONLY ones who were doing it. Today, however, homeschool activities abound. YMCA’s, community centers, state parks and zoos have all opened their doors to the homeschool community. Spanish tutors, art teachers, gymnastics and dance studio owners have all realized that there is huge segment of students out there who are available during times other than “school hours” and they have accordingly started programs with classes and group activities for these folks. (Incidentally, I have had more than one business owner tell me that they LOVE it when they get a group of homeschoolers on the schedule because they tend to be very well behaved, punctual and engaged.) Homeschooled children participate in team sports and some (like my daughter) participate in P.E. classes at a local school. As you can see, opportunities to socialize are not only available but are abundant.

One parting thought on this idea of the importance of socializing: Are we concerned about opportunities to socialize because we want them to be viable members of their community? If so, ponder this. Homeschooled children are exposed to a variety of experiences with a variety of people of differing ages. They are often spending time in “the real world” (a trip to the grocery store, accompanying a family member to work, getting to spend time with aging and or ill family members) and they are not confined to a classroom with one teacher and 20 children their own age. Which of the above scenarios do you think is more valuable in preparing them to engage socially as they get older and more independent*?

SOCIALIZATION - Merriam - Webster defines socialization as, “the process by which a human being acquires the habits, beliefs, and accumulated knowledge of society through education and training for adult status.” Socialization is a different animal all together. We’re not talking about having time to hang out after class and talk about your latest crush. This is about training the next generation as a whole to function in a prescribed way and instilling “habits and beliefs.” There are many homeschoolers, myself included, who have chosen to educate their own BECAUSE of the idea of socialization. I am not worried about the fact that my child is not getting “socialized” by an educational system that I see as broken and one who would train my children to have habits and beliefs that I do not ascribe to. I choose to educate my own for many reasons, one of which is because I believe that their “accumulated knowledge of society” should come from me and be rooted in my beliefs about how they should be “trained for adult status.” Allowing my children to be trained by a group of people that I do not know (and ones who may hold vastly differing viewpoints on such things as my child’s purpose in society) is precisely what I am trying to avoid.

Now let me back up a second (because I can hear you shouting at your computer screen) and address the concerns of, “You can’t keep your children in a bubble! They should be able to hear differing views! They should be taught how to function as part of a whole!” First, I agree. I can not keep my children in a bubble nor do I want to. I do, however, believe that it is my duty to be the primary “translator” for my child. They will experience things and have questions about those experiences. We all filter our experiences through our belief systems and values. We interpret the world based on our “filter”. My job as a mother and as a teacher is to help them develop a healthy filter. One that will rely on truth and honesty and integrity to make decisions and judgments. While I do not have any problems with them hearing views and beliefs that are different from mine, I do have a problem with them being told the views that our family holds (for example our beliefs about absolute truth, a Creator, or personal freedoms) are not “politically correct.” As to the query of “raising a good citizen who will function as part of a whole”, my answer to that is, “What better way to train a child to function as part of a whole than to give him a meaningful place of honor and responsibility in his own family among siblings, mother father and extended family?” The family unit is the perfect proving ground for learning how to thoughtfully and efficiently function as part of a greater body.

So there you have it. Whether you are ruminating over this question of social interaction for yourself or you are answering others who have questions about the well being of your child, know that there are differences in the meanings of socializing and socialization. Be encouraged in the fact that there are plenty of opportunities for socializing and be empowered with the knowledge that as a homeschooler, you can determine just how your child gets “socialized.”

No, we’re not talking about immunizations. We are talking about booster shots for those families that have homeschooled for so long, or so in depth that they have lost the joy of why they started this journey in the first place.

You may be one of those families that has been homeschooling for 9 years or so and now are on the home stretch, or you may be new to the journey and have gotten in over your head and wondered if this is the right choice. Any and all of us could use a Booster Shot at some point.

Here my top 10 ideas:

10. Field Trip! Just a short one or maybe even a day long adventure - your choice, but there is nothing like a field trip to break up the week and breath life into a student’s schedule.

9. Read Aloud! If you don’t already do this, it’s a good time to start when your battery is low. You can read to them, or they can take turns reading to you and each other. It’s a great way to bond and relax. Yes, even high school kids like this still!

8. School Outside! The weather is turning warmer in most parts of the country! Take the books, the art, the portable CD player and learn outside. Even better, just walk and study what is about to bloom and discuss the science of this blessing!

7. Combining 8 & 9! One booster for us, all the way up until mid high school, was to take a huge blanket out under the sun or shade tree and read. We would watch clouds, pet new baby chicks or kitties and just enjoy hearing a good story in the fresh air.

6. Year-round School Schedule! This SOUNDS awful to some people, but it doesn’t ‘t really mean school every single day! It means for each month of the year, you have school for 3 weeks and then one week off. These schedules can often be planned around holidays. If you and your student knew that every three weeks you both got a significant break, there is time to plan fun or just do NOTHING every month!

5. Find a Co-op! Many area support groups have some co-op learning classes. Often it will require that you volunteer a bit of your time once in a while, but the change of pace and learning surroundings can be invaluable to both you and all students involved!

4. Let the Student Plan - not You! One of my children wanted the freedom to plan her own Senior year completely. She chose an extra science and an extra social studies. She also planned every weeks’ work and is doing so that she can be finished WELL before her graduation ceremony date - by her 18th birthday! This has motivated her and also taught her accountability. It has also lightened my load to simply grading!

3. Let a Science Experiment ‘evolve’ into more! This was always one sure fire way for my kids to get a little giggly or off track - but boy it is memorable and it was worth the side track! Take the science experiment to any lengths your child’s questions or curiosity will let it go (but let’s be safe about it). Not only do they learn more by not having to fit into a science ‘box’ - but you will ignite the joy of learning again - and you will LOVE to see how their minds work when unhindered by steps preordained by someone else!

2. Talk with others! When you get the chance, ask other parents for ideas that may be inviting to your homeschool to use. You may also be surprised how your kids react when they find out what other kids do for their homeschool. My kids were actually pleasantly pleased when they heard the schedule and weight of some other homeschooled students their age. I became a ‘cool’ mom (for a little while anyway).

1. My number 1 favorite! Just take the day off (or the week) when you know you’ve all reached your limit! Bake a big ole batch of chocolate chip cookies, play with the pets, make a mess, don’t grade, don’t file and don’t worry. Mix this in with prayer and thanksgiving that you have the chance to be home with your kids and I’ll guarantee that an attitude of gratitude will renew that joy to your homeschool heart!

Just as retailers plan and set out attractive displays to take advantage of seasonal spending, you need to keep seasonal interests in mind for your online marketing. Granted, you reach a worldwide audience, so you don’t need to be too specific. But there are certain “seasons” for buying that are universal.

New Year’s – The start of the year causes people to make those pesky New Year’s resolutions. They promise to lose weight, start exercising, clean out clutter in home and office, establish better time management skills and begin regular savings programs.

The search engines are buzzing with these keyword topics the week before January and throughout the month. You need to be ready with information products to turn those resolutions into workable strategies. But do it fast, because resolutions don’t last much past February.

Spring – When tiny flowers and green leaves peek out from winter weary branches, there’s a sense of renewal. People start to think about planting a garden, fixing up the patio or landscape and beginning outdoor sports. Package information products on early gardening and join affiliate programs that ship flowers and buds.

Summer – This is prime family vacation time - parents looking for activities for children who are out of school and outdoor entertainment. You don’t have to compete with the big travel sites. What you have to offer is ideas for summer fun - family friendly resorts, how to choose a summer camp and creating lush outdoor spaces on a budget.

Back to School – At least a month before school starts, parents are shopping for school clothes, supplies and electronics. Present reviews that are informative and connected to affiliate programs for back to school products. Don’t forget the homeschool families and add products for them, too.

Fall, Harvest, Thanksgiving - The change of seasons brings last camping opportunities, team sports, school events and family travel for the traditional Thanksgiving holiday. Put a new twist on information products, such as how to prepare a vegan feast or helping your child cross-train for multiple sports participation.

Winter, Christmas - The colder weather brings winter sports, family gatherings, shopping and decorating for holidays in December. Prepare a list of less crowded, budget friendly winter sports vacations, and how to save time shopping online and decorating using what you already have at home. It’s also leading into the year-end time of reflection when people think about what they enjoyed and what they want to change next year.

As you make seasonal marketing plans, remember that the seasons arrive at different times on each side of the equator. So if you’re marketing outside of the United States, what you consider spring may be fall elsewhere.

Winter break can be prime ski resort time in Aspen, Colorado and sun-bathing on the beach in Sydney, Australia. The good news is that you can use “spring” for both sides of the equator with different timing and slight tweaks of the information.

A high school diploma is a basic necessity if you want a decent job in the future or if you want to proceed for further studies. Here are some tips to guide you through the process of successfully earning your high school diploma.

It Requires Hard Work. You will need to devote time and effort in order to lay your hands on that diploma. Just assuming that it is a piece of cake and not working towards earning it can leave a bitter taste at the last moment and it might be too late to activate your brain cells during crunch time. So work hard from the start of the year itself so that there is no undue pressure throughout the course.

Approach Methodically. Have a clear plan of action in your mind and if possible on paper as to how you intend to reach your goals. Keep your plan realistic and achievable but do not push everything at the rear or you could have too much pressure and do not start off with an explosive push since that could burn you out before the end of the semester. Instead, pace yourself with smaller modules. By splitting large tasks into smaller modules, you will be able to achieve them in the fixed time limit and that will give you a sense of satisfaction and confidence to take the future tasks at hand.

Keep An Eye On Areas Of Interest. Even as you study hard to inch towards that high school diploma, keep an eye out on subjects that interest you more and in which you manage to achieve better results. These subjects can be pursued in case you opt for higher studies or you could get jobs related to the subjects of your choice.

Get Help Wherever Needed. You might find some subjects harder to grasp as compared to others. Do not hesitate to ask your teachers for extra help or try to study with a group of other students who might be able to help you out in those subjects. In exchange, you can help other weak students in your stronger subjects.

Measure And Push Yourself Up The Grading Ladder. You will soon come to know as to where you stand since regular tests by your teachers will result in grades. In case you have got a ‘C’ grade in any particular subject, study harder to progress towards a ‘B’ and then ultimately towards an ‘A’ or an ‘A+’. If you do not pay heed to those results then you will always remain at the lower end and might even slip lower during the final tests. So, keep an eye on those grades and push yourself to perform better.

All Work And No Play Makes Jack Tired And Irritable. Work hard but take regular breaks in order to refresh your mind and body. Eat well, sleep properly and pursue your hobbies as long as it is within the prescribed time limit.

Age Is Not A Factor. If you have missed the high school diploma train then do not worry. Try your luck at any age and nowadays there are diplomas offered online too and these can offer you a chance to catch up on your dreams.

Achieving that high school diploma requires will power and hard work and by following these tips and keeping one eye on the future benefits, it might not be long before you could be tossing that graduation cap in the air.

Grading in homeschooling is done by the teacher-in-charge. In most of the cases, this means mom! In this situation, grading can get a bit tricky because it can be a little difficult to grade your own child.

There is no benchmark against which you can evaluate your child’s performance. In most cases, you also have no awareness of how well other children are doing. So, obviously the traditional method of grading is perhaps not the best method to follow.

When grading a child undergoing homeschooling, it is more important to assess whether the child has understood the subject that is being taught. Inherent in this is the fact that if the child has not understood something, you will go over it again. This will work in your child’s favour in 2 ways.

Firstly, the child knows that if he or she fails to catch on, the topic will be repeated till it is mastered. Secondly, the child also knows that once the topic has been mastered, he or she will get full credit for his hard work. Getting full reward for the hard work put in is a great motivational factor, especially for kids.

When assessing your child’s abilities, do not allow emotions to overcrowd your rationale. Do not yield to the cries and tears of your child if he or she resists certain topics or subjects. If mastering these skills is necessary, then you as the teacher (and not as the parent alone) have to go over the topic over and over till it sinks in.

When dealing with tougher concepts, the child may get restless and may even show frustration or belligerence. When the child is still young and unable to understand the importance of his lessons, it is your responsibility to see to it that the child develops the skill set necessary for future growth.

In case you belong to a state that requires yearly tests, this will help you to judge your child’s ability vis-a-vis his peers. Even if it is not mandatory, you may want to test your child every year. These tests will reveal the variations in the child’s learning pattern. It may show up unexpected areas of strength and hitherto unknown areas of weakness. This enables you to structure your teaching to cover the areas that are weak, and build upon the areas that are strong.

In case your state requires a home school report card, keep a record of the yearly development and scores of your child. Include pertinent areas like punctuality, discipline etc in the report. You may also need to keep a record of the number of working days and attendance schedules.

While grading your child, make sure that you use as many external tests as possible. There are several websites that deal with the various age groups, and allow free downloading of question papers. This is an excellent and cost-effective method to assess your child. Homeschooling, if done in the proper manner, will boost the child’s confidence because he will be studying to satisfy his natural curiosity. The scores therefore will reflect his true intelligence.

If your son or daughter is struggling in math class and needs math homework help, a math tutor can prove to be a valuable resource! The math tutor can not only present the material covered in class in a manner conducive to your child’s learning style, but can also ensure that he or she stays ahead of the curve by focusing on skills that he or she may not have fully grasped in previous math courses. That is, the math tutor can provide your child with the math homework help he or she needs to obtain math solutions in Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus.

When most students need math homework help, they usually just want to focus on getting solutions to homework problems so that they can quickly finish their homework and not think about math until the next assignment is due. Though your child may finish all of his or her work using this method, it does not prove effective or beneficial in the long run.

The math tutor must be able to review and/or teach all the relevant material your child needs to know while making sure that he or she is able to obtain the necessary math solutions to complete his or her homework. In addition, the math tutor should always strive to challenge your child by making him or her obtain math solutions to the hardest problems possible. Using this method, your child will be prepared to answer any questions that the teacher may ask in class, on a homework assignment, or on a test. Initially your child may feel uneasy about working on the hardest problems within a given topic when receiving math homework help, but this technique has proven highly effective for many students who then feel prepared to tackle a variety of more challenging topics in their math class. In other words, it is always advisable to stay a step (or two!) ahead of the teacher so that the student has time to understand the material he or she has to cover before working on it in class.

When your child is able to cover material before it is covered in class, he or she feels more relaxed and eager to stay alert in class and stay ahead of the curriculum. Appropriate math homework help can ensure that the student maintains his or her enthusiasm in math class and does not feel overwhelmed every time a test is administered. Many students cram all night every time a quiz or test is given and still do not get the desired results! With the right math tutor, your child will be able to simply review topics when a test or final comes up since he or she would have covered them thoroughly with the math tutor, weeks in advance.

It should be noted that the tutor should not become a substitute for hard work and preparation on the part of the student. Remember that your child must challenge him or herself to solve math problems and get math solutions by working diligently and regularly on math even when he or she is not working with the math tutor. The tutor can help to facilitate this process by assigning homework problems that your child should work on as well as helping to keep your child focused on achieving the benchmarks within each topic.

In conclusion, the right math tutor is an excellent resource that your child can use to get ahead in math class and regain the confidence that he or she needs to excel on homework and tests. For that reason, you should be careful to choose a math tutor that will not only help your child to complete homework and find math solutions, but also challenge him or her to work on the most difficult math problems.

You’ve made the decision that homeschooling your child is the right decision for you, your child, and the rest of your family. Now you find yourself dealing with a mix of excitement and fear. What comes next? Will you be able to pull this off? Do you really know how to home school your child? Are you really prepared for this?

Relax.

I’ve got three top tips to get you started off on the right foot. Knowing how to home school your child isn’t nearly as difficult as you might imagine.

1. Learn The Rules

Every state and many local municipalities have unique rules and requirements that govern their home schooling programs. Some are very loose. Others are quite strict. So you want to begin your new journey by learning and following these requirements.

For home schoolers, you’ll likely want to investigate home education regulations and equivalency laws. For example, you may need to maintain records of child’s progress. And though rare, some states may also require the teaching parent to meet minimum educational qualifications.

Don’t let this scare you away.

The rules are designed to provide the best experience for your child and are generally easily met.

2. Join A Support Group

It’s always helpful to participate in a support group when venturing into new territory and this is true of home schooling as well. A group of like-minded people, many who have “been there and done that” can not only help bolster your decision to home school, but can also provide you with valuable tips and advice that will make your experience go much smoother.

In addition, you’ll find many such groups support outside activities that help promote your child’s social interactions. Visits to the zoo or the museum, tours of the local newspaper, and afternoon bowling league… these all provide great opportunities for your child’s socialization.

3. Establishing Your Curriculum

The next step in getting you past the initial fear of how to home school your child is to determine the curriculum. This is an important step since influencing what your child learns is one of the primary reasons for home schooling. And this is the best place start, with the question: why do I want to home school my child?

The answer to this question can guide you through the decision making process in developing your curriculum.

In addition, the state or local education agency should be able to provide you with guidelines for your child’s age. You’ll also want to make sure the curriculum is appropriate for your child’s unique skills, abilities, and needs. That’s what makes learning how to home school so worth your time and efforts.

For many people, homeschooling may call to mind the picture of two or three children sitting at a table and writing feverishly in their workbooks, while mom or dad stands nearby. This is the not entirely true. There are different methods of homeschooling, and the method you choose will decide the curriculum and your style of teaching. Given below are some of the most influential and popular homeschooling methods.

The Charlotte Mason method:

Charlotte Mason is known as the founder of the homeschooling movement. A homeschooler herself, she was passionate in her zeal to lay out the foundations for an effective a complete homeschooling program that is fun and educational at the same time. This method focuses on all the core subjects with emphasis placed on classical literature, poetry, fine arts, classical music and craft. Mason used a variety of books from classical literature, which she called ‘Living Books’. Since this method encourages a passionate awareness of literature, the child is read to daily from the ‘Living Books’. After this, the child is asked to narrate what she has heard. This process begins at the age of six, and by ten the child is expected to write her narrations in her book. Mason also advocated the use of ‘Nature Diaries’. After each short and interesting lesson, the child is asked to go to Nature and draw observations from Nature. Thus the child also gains a sense of respect for her environment. Mason believed that development of good character and behavior was essential to the complete development of the child’s personality.

The Eclectic Homeschooling:

This is a mixture of various homeschooling techniques. Here, the innovative parents trust their own judgment and pick out the topics that make the best curriculum for their child. Such parents continuously look out for the best products that will meet the needs of their homeschoolers. Most Eclectic homeschooling curriculums are improvised. This means that the basic curriculum is ready-made. The parents then make changes in the curriculum to accommodate the individual needs and interests of their children. The child’s gifts, temperament, learning style and interests dictate the curriculum. Eclectic programs include visits to the museum, libraries and factories.

Unschooling:

A Boston public educator name John Holt laid the beginnings of the unschooling method. He believed that children learned best when they are free to learn at their own pace and when they are guided by their own interests. His message was to ‘unschool’ the child. This method is a hands-on approach to learning, where the parent takes definite cues from the children. There is no definite curriculum, schedules or materials. This method is the most unstructured of the various homeschooling techniques.

The Montessori Method:

This method began in Italy, when it was observed that children have acute sensitive periods, during which they undergo periods of intense concentration. During such phases, a child will repeat an activity till he gains a measure of self-satisfaction. The Montessori method depends on a prepared environment to facilitate learning. All the materials used in this method are designed to satisfy the inner desire for spiritual development of the child. The materials used progress from simple to complex, and are rather expensive.

These are just a few of the methods of homeschooling. Whatever the method, the underlying factor is flexibility and a keen interest in the desires of the child. The secret is to use the child’s desire for knowledge to further his education.
